Kitchen Cabinet Makeover

I am in the process of redoing my kitchen cabinets, they are 15 years old and are a white thermofoil finish. All of the cabinet makers that have come into the house have suggested replacing them with cherry cabinets. I have a medium oak trim & doors throughout the house and maple floors in the family room, living & dining rooms taht are stained to amtch the oak (Mercier Gunstock) . There is a tile floor in the kitchen, all the floors have recently been replaced. My question is this, can I use a different wood species such as cherry wood for the cabinets or should I stick to maple for consistency? Again there is no maple directly in the kitchen but the patio doors & window are trimmed in the oak and the dining room and family flank the kitchen.

Ray Staples once said something that I'll never forget. I'm paraphrasing, but she basically said 'There's more than one type of tree in the forest and it looks good. Why should their only be one type of wood in your house?'

Personally, I like the mixed wood look. I've got hickory cupboards, maple floors and pine doors; and I'm quite happy with the mixture. It sounds like the oak in your house paired with cupboards in a different would be a good mixture. (Ie - if you've got all oak, you don't one wee little piece of furniturein something different; but cabinets are substantial, and will do well holding their own against the oak.)

If anything worried it me, it would be the mixture of the colours. Cherry tends to be on the pinkish side to me. Oak tends to be more orange. While I have no objections to mixing wood; I'd want to make sure that the stains are of similar tones.
